Change Of Roster…Always For The Best…Visiting Alma Mater!

Maverick here…in New York waiting to get on my flight to Chicago and then Anchorage (the midnite express)…but…I was on reserve the day before…this is where they call you and tell you do do something different than what you were scheduled for (not always but it does happen)….

So…called our Crew Control to see if there was something else I would be doing and the guy said…no Capt Dino…but there is a change down the road for you…instead of New York-Chicago-Anchorage (one nite)-Hong Kong-one nite-Anchorage (one nite)-New York…you will now be doing New York-Chicago-Anchorage (one nite)-Chicago (two nites)-Anchorage (one nite)-New York.

Not a bad change…it occasionally does happen…that is the airline life…never boring…always dynamic…and exciting…but…I got an interesting idea…

My University where I learned how to fly and all the roots for a very rewarding and full-of-fun life were put…Western Michigan University…was only 160 miles (300km) away from Chicago airport…and since I had over 48 hours in Chicago and had not been there for over 7 years (went to the Battle Creek airport in a T-38)…

WHY NOT?

So, I put the travel agent hat and found a great rental car deal…talked to our long time secretary Leisa…and arranged to speak to a class about aviation (got to contribute to where you started right?)…and also called my first aviation professor, Tom…with which we had much in common (he was a T-38 instructor in the USAF)…so the trip was all set!

Seven years ago and change, in May 2001we had a nice visit with Tom when I flew a T-38 in to Battle Creek Michigan and got to see Tom and his wife Nancy, stayed at his place for one nite, visit my school…and of course speak to a class about flying and my experiences…here are some interesting pictures of the visit:

Is not the T-38 a fantastic looking airplane?

OK…so fast forward seven years and change…Mav gets in a car from Chicago at 6am to avoid the traffic…and sure glad I did…I saw the traffic coming the other way as I was leaving downtown Chicago!

Around 1030 in the morning (one hour time difference) I was in Kalamazoo, MI…went to get a haircut…don’t want to be shoddy speaking to a class…and went to Leisa…and there I met a British guy that worked with one of my buddies in my current airline…how small is this world really?

Had a nice quiet lunch with Leisa, got to catch up…actually did not finish…lots of years to catch up…went to Battle Creek and spoke to the students…about the current airline industry and what is going on…no…no talk about Maverick Income Systems…but they sure now were excited at the end about the opportunities in Asia…and it was great to give some back…to the place where it all started!

And of course got to see 6226K, the legendary Cessna 150 that has made history with the Maverick in it…more on that on another post at a later time…but here are a couple of pics with it…

It was impressive to get a tour of the current facilities in WMU Aviation and got to go to their store and get some Aviation Department Propaganda!

The Dean and the professors are doing a great job keeping the students motivated about Aviation besides the interesting timing (OK it is bad now!) in the industry…they have told them the truth…if you are doing it just for the money…you are in the wrong business.

Then, it was time to go visit and catch up with Tom…drove to his house in Kalamazoo…we sat down and talked…and talked…and talked…and had I stayed there for a week…we would still be talking!

Of course, Maverick Income Systems came up…I was able to show him (no I don’t do this for everyone!), Maverick Target #1 and Maverick Target #2 CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION (well let’s just say I showed him everything that happens behind the scenes).

He was quite amazed by either of them…and who knows, one day I may even be able to do some business with my first professor in college…and one of my mentors…

Tom told me about his very interesting retirement venture…delivering RVs…and proudly showed me his huge white Ford 1 TON pick up with which he makes the deliveries with…quite impressive!

But the kicker was when I told him about my ultimate business and fun goal (make sure you read about it if you have not!)…

Of course the largest part of the conversation was geared toward the aviation industry, where the university is going, and what the airlines are doing these days…and I think from meeting around 1800, we did go to sleep around 0030…

Here is what our meeting looked like today…we took some more pictures…of course…

Got up next morning…talked again more and more…and got on my way to Chicago…so I have to say a big thanks to my airline for changing the roster…in Greece we say every obstacle (Mav Addition…or change…) is for good (Mav addition…you sometimes don’t know what is right at that second but you eventually find out…)…

Check Six,

The Maverick
